Insider's View1. San Roque
If I won a weekend in Tenerife, this renovated Canarian mansion in Garachico is where I'd choose to stay. It isn't the biggest, most luxurious or most expensive hotel on Tenerife; it's just the best in my opinion. Immaculate and individual style, comfort and tranquillity combined with consummate customer service and food.
2. Bahia Del Duque
Probably the biggest, most ostentatious and luxurious hotel on Tenerife, the village-sized complex in Costa Adeje has a style and class all of its own. You'll need a degree to figure out what all the switches in your room operate and GPS to find your way to the pool but you'll want for nothing.
On a headland above Playa de San Juan, I love the Abama's North African Moorish decor in its rooms and villas and its stunning James Bond-style beach at the foot of the cliffs. The splendid 18 hole golf course doesn't do anything for me but allegedly Bill Clinton loves it.
4. Sir Anthony
In Playa de Las Américas, the Sir Anthony is my idea of what a modern luxury hotel should look like. Vibrant colours, clean lines and a private pool on the terrace. I'd look good on that California pink lounger in my shades. Now, if I could just afford it?
5. Vincci Plantación del Sur
I'm a sucker for Colonial style; light and airy with elegant wood and rattan finishes. The Plantación's spa is sensually sumptuous and a person could lose entire days in it but the jewel in the crown for me is the food; for my money, it's the best on the island.
6. Botanico and Oriental Spa Garden Hotel
For me, the Hotel Botánico in Puerto de la Cruz is a real five star hotel where the stars are for total quality service and attention to detail rather than a tick list of facilities. Crossing the Botánico's threshold is like stepping into Thailand; from its owner's personal art collection to its amazing Oriental Spa Garden.
7. Villa Cortés
Think Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones in 'Mask of Zorro'; style, luxury and elegance Mexico wishes it had. If you're a magnolia sort of person you'll hate it. Vibrant, bold colours and handmade, dark wood furniture in a 'Hollywood meets Mexico' setting. Plus the coolest beach bar for a sun-downer.
8. Be Live Playa La Arena
I defy anybody not to be impressed when they walk into the Playa de la Arena's cavernous, leafy lobby with its marble floors and waterfalls. Personally I find the room décor a bit uninspired but it's more than compensated for by the food, the beautiful grounds and the location.
Located in Park Taoro, a tropical oasis overlooking Puerto de la Cruz, this is a friendly, family run hotel with a secluded, tranquil atmosphere. Guests are treated like friends by the owners and staff who constantly provide wonderful little touches like patterns of petals on the dining tables. I think it's a gem of a place.
10. La Victoria
About as far removed from the Bahia Del Duque as it's possible to get - which shows I'm nothing if not diverse in taste - is this charismatic little rural hotel in La Orotava. All polished floors, carved wooden balconies, window seats and billowing linen curtains, the Victoria is straight from the pages of a Jane Austin novel.
