Insider's View

Tenerife Insider Costa Adeje is expanding at a rate of knots and now incorporates Callao Salvaje, Playa Paraíso, La Caleta, El Duque, Fañabe, Torviscas and San Eugenio

Costa Adeje actually also includes a large part of Playa de Las Américas and it’s all terribly confusing

Back in the 1990s when the British tabloid press started to run horror stories of clubbing antics in Playa de Las Américas, Tenerife invested heavily in cleaning up its act and re-branding itself. Five star hotels and designer outlets sprang up in Fañabe which the developers labelled Costa Adeje and the marketing folks promoted as 'upmarket'.

Before long, whole swathes of what used to be Playa de Las Américas was suddenly being promoted as being in Costa Adeje in order to align itself with the shiny, new image of the south. In truth, the party centre which created the reputation in the first place is centred around the Veronica's and Starco's area and is shrinking faster than the pound. Costa Adeje, on the other hand is expanding at a rate of knots and now incorporates Callao Salvaje, Playa Paraíso, La Caleta, El Duque, Fañabe, Torviscas and San Eugenio.

Geographically speaking, Costa Adeje actually also includes a large part of Playa de Las Américas and it's all terribly confusing for holiday makers.

In essence, the whole of the south has had huge investment over the past eight years and now has modern, clean and vibrant resorts that suit families and singles alike.

My advice? Read each of the area overviews to see if it fits with the sort of holiday you’re looking for. As a rule of thumb, Playa de Las Américas is still the nightlife centre of the south so decide how near or far from that you want to be. Don't assume that if it's in Costa Adeje it must be upmarket and if it's in Playa de Las Américas it must be tacky; you can move through wallet-mugging to purse-friendly, and back again, in a single palm-lined stroll. Just don't choose Callao Salvaje and expect to be able to walk to Veronica's…you have been warned!
