Fanabe is in the quieter area of Costa Adeje near to Playa de las Americas. It is one of the more upmarket areas of the resort and has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches with a wide promenade full of shops, bars and restaurants.

Fanabe is known to have some of the best beaches in Tenerife which are protected by stone groins. It is a very popular resort with families and couples. The famous Aquapark Octopus is near to Fanabe which is popular with families and young adults.

Whilst staying in Fanabe if it's night life you are after you are just 3 km from Playa de las Americas where you will find a wide choice. Fanabe itself is a maze of narrow streets. The streets are lined with shops, bars and restaurants as well as little boutiques to get your souvenirs from.

The capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, is 45 minutes away and Reina Sofia Airport is 15 minutes away.

Fañabe still has a more exclusive and less frenetic feel to it than the main nightlife centres

Fañabe (pronounced Fan-yah-bay) is the resort responsible for earning Costa Adeje its 'upmarket' tag and putting a serious dent in the popular cheap and cheerful image of Tenerife's southern tourist resorts. Although the arrival of the five star hotels at El Duque has raised the bar on the meaning of upmarket, Fañabe still has a more exclusive and less frenetic feel to it than the main nightlife centres further along the coast.

I find it fascinating to stroll along the promenade behind the long, golden sand of Playa Fañabe which bridges the gap between the new, chic hotels and the older tourist area of Torviscas. It's as if the prices on the menus are on a slope and are sliding down. A burger at the El Duque end will cost you more than you'll pay for a main course of locally caught fish at the Torviscas end. I tend to eat half way down the price slope at somewhere like Coeur de Filet where I can get a very nice meal without feeling that the waiter should be wearing a stocking over his head.

I enjoy shopping around Fañabe, especially on a Thursday and Saturday when the car park opposite the El Duque shopping centre becomes a bustling outdoor market. Shopaholics should also check out the Gransur shopping centre on the other side of the motorway from the main resort area for designer clothes at purse-friendly prices and to catch the latest movie releases at the centre's multicine; one of the only places on Tenerife where you can see movie releases in English.

And the must-sees? Catch a taxi or bus to old Adeje town in the hills behind the resort to experience what island life is like outside the tourist resorts. It's also a good excuse to try out the local speciality, garlic chicken, at Otelo's restaurant and to venture into the depths of the Barranco del Infierno (Hell's Valley), the most popular walk on Tenerife.
