Tenerife Insider My advice? Granadilla is a perfect base for exploring the south on foot...

A typical Canarian hill town, Granadilla is 600 metres above sea level which makes it cooler than the south coast in winter and hotter in summer. For me, Granadilla has a really nice, old fashioned feel about it where the pace of life is decidedly unhurried.

The clothes shop still has shirts in boxes stacked behind the counter which I haven't seen since I was a child and there are hardware shops with stock that looks like it was made pre-war; they do have some really useful stuff and some lovely coffee cups at ridiculously cheap prices though!

Some of the most picturesque places on Tenerife are here in my opinion, like the church and the pastel-coloured houses that line the cobbled street alongside the rural hotel. You should definitely go to the quirky little museum in the town to see its version of the Chamber of Horrors; some Guanche mummified remains and bones scattered around a sinister looking graveyard. It's also a good example of a very traditional Canarian house with wooden ceilings and floors, tiny rooms, a distinct lack of windows and skull-cracking doorways.

My hot tip for dining out is Casa Togoro. Their menu includes game and even kangaroo occasionally and if it's a chilly night you can sit in front of the open fireplace in the courtyard which is really cosy and romantic. It's also as close as you're going to get to night-life in Granadilla.

My advice? Granadilla is a perfect base for exploring the south on foot. You can pick up walking routes from the rural hotel and they have a good selection of tourist information in their little office too.
