Alcala

Alcala

Travel Agents View

Travel Agents View Alcala is located within the area of Guia de Isora. It is a small fishing village just a few kilometres from the main tourist centre. In the centre there are numerous shops, bars and restaurants to explore. Ideal for a quiet relaxing holiday.

The main income of the residents come from the sea. There is a natural bathing pool which is just a stones throw away from the village.

Alcala offers a shady village square which is often used as a meeting area for the old and the young. The capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, is 95 km away whilst Tenerife Airport is 30 km from the village.

Insider's View

Insider Nightlife in Alcalá consists of putting a worm onto a hook and dropping it over the harbour wall or the side of your boat

Before the Gran Melia Palacio Hotel was built right on the village doorstep, few people had even heard of Alcalá. For residents of the west coast, Alcalá is where you go when you want to buy a new part for the washing machine or some tiles to replace the cracked ones on the terrace.

I go there to visit the bakery on the plaza for a pizza slice or one of their pies and a cake. It's also one of the few places outside the larger northern centres where you can get an arepa - Venezuelan fried corn cakes stuffed with various fillings - at Palma del Llano on the plaza. My favourite is 'carne mechada' which is spicy shredded beef. It's greasy and sticks in your teeth, but smothered in the hot chilli sauce they leave on the table it's addictively good.

The town beach in Alcalá is about the size of a large sand pit but the paved sundecks are popular and I like to wander along the geranium lined promenade that joins the village to the Gran Melia Palacio. The rock pools here are good for some amateur bird watching with plovers, turnstones and curlews all putting in an appearance. For great food, a nice atmosphere and unbeatable sunset views, my hot tip is the La Escondida bar/chill-out lounge and restaurant which is perched above the harbour and accessible via Pasaje el Ancla. Nightlife in Alcalá consists of putting a worm onto a hook and dropping it over the harbour wall or the side of your boat, except for two or three nights a year when they break out the party bag, festoon the plaza in coloured bunting, erect a stage and turn it into a mini South American republic.

And the must-sees? If you're planning to visit at or around the 15th August, Alcalá stages one of the best firework displays on the island as part of their Virgen del Candelaria fiestas.
