Situated to the north west of the island, Icod de los Vinos is an ideal holiday destination for those seeking a relaxing holiday. Within the resort visitors are able to enjoy superb views of Mount Teide.

One of the main attractions in Icod de los Vinos is Drago Park which is the home to the amazing Dragon Tree which is believed to be over 600 years old. Other attractions include botanical gardens and San Marcos church.

The rough and rugged coast line does limit swimming opportunities although there is a small black sandy beach at Playa San Marcos which is very popular.

Tenerife north airport is 47 km and Tenerife south airport is 73 km.

Insider's View

 by Andrea Montgomery

Tenerife Insider This is a real locals beach and a bit of a secret, so don't go telling everyone...

The main thing that Icod is known for is the Millennium Drago Tree; one of the oldest members of the plant kingdom. Legend has it that the drago tree was born from a hundred headed dragon when it was slain; for every drop of blood that fell a tree in the dragons likeness grew. The tree is notoriously difficult to age and this one could be anywhere between 650 years and the 1,000 years after which it's named. But don't pay to go into the park to see it, you can get just as good a view from the Plaza de San Marcos for nothing and while you're there, nip into the church of the same name which is one of Tenerife's most ornate with a priceless collection of silver.

Just along from the plaza is the Mariposario del Drago or butterfly farm which is a delight. A hothouse filled with tropical plants and of course butterflies, you can watch them emerge from their cocoons or see the incredible Atticus Atlas giant moth which I have to say gives me the judders. Luckily it sleeps all day but I always know exactly where it is when I'm in there...

The main shopping street is also by the plaza and has some great little independent clothes and jewellery shops; I don't think I've ever made it from end to the other without at least browsing.

On Icod's coast is the sheltered bay of San Marcos with its pretty beach and good restaurants. This is a real locals beach and a bit of a secret so don't go telling everyone.

And the must-sees? On November 30th, fiesta de San Andrés, local lads go Jackass and ride polished boards at breakneck speed down near-vertical streets and crash spectacularly into a mound of tyres at the bottom. It's compulsive viewing; like rubber necking at a traffic accident - I'll see you there.
