It's always a couple of degrees cooler in La Laguna and, unsurprisingly for somewhere whose name means 'the lake', it has been known to rain, especially in winter. So if you're looking for a beach holiday you're in the wrong place.

Historic buildings, narrow cobbled streets lined with charismatic tapas restaurants, lively bars, art exhibitions, hidden courtyards and culture by the bucketful; that's La Laguna. For me, La Laguna is the most interesting and enjoyable city on Tenerife and I'm a regular visitor. I never tire of wandering the old quarter and I have a whole load of places that are regulars on my tour.

First stop is always one of the tables in Plaza Adelantado for an arepa from the Perla del Caribe. The place looks awful but the arepas are excellent; try the carne machada.

Amongst the endless list of things to see are the recently refurbished Teatro Leal; the Cathedral (if it's open, it's been under renovation for six years; they don't do things in a hurry on Tenerife); the Church of the Conception with its grey and white stone tower; the convents and the most venerated of Tenerife's statues - the 16th Century Flemish carving of Christ in the Church of El Cristo.

If you're planning an Easter break here, make sure it includes Good Friday and don't miss the processions of silence which have Holy Orders dressed in robes that we associate with the Ku Klux Klan and barefoot monks in ankle and wrist chains dragging a full sized crucifix.

And the must-sees? The Museum of Science and the Cosmos which is brilliant fun for all the family and free entrance on Sundays. The fantastic market filled with food and flower produce which you can easily lose an hour wandering around, and the courtyard of the Instituto Cabrero Pinto which is just lovely.
