Playa de la Arena is ideal for a quiet holiday for families, couples and older visitors. It is situated on the west coast of Tenerife which has the most amount of sunshine on the island.

This resort has spotless, natural black sand beaches with beautiful cliffs, however it may be a bit hilly for some people.

Although Playa de la Arena is a small resort, it does have a lot of family orientated bars, restaurants and shops to enjoy quiet drinks and meals. Playa de la Arena is also a good base to use if you want to explore the island.

I have a real soft spot for Playa de la Arena. It's an unassuming, unpretentious little place without a particularly strong personality, but it has a friendly, relaxing ambience and people tend to come here time after time. I think it's one of those 'either love it or hate it' places.

It's definitely not for clubbers and 'entertain me' audiences; Playa de la Arena is more suited to smoochy couples - young and old - and young families who are happy to while the time away on the black sand beach. Set in a sheltered little cove, backed by palm trees and with the island of La Gomera on the horizon, it's got a 'totally tropical' feel. For me, the beach is the resort’s unique selling point and is one of the best for miles.

Playa de la Arena is blessed with having some of the best weather on Tenerife as it rarely rains. Even when the cloud descends across the rest of the island, the chances are the sun will be shining on Playa de la Arena.

There are quite a few Canarians living in the resort and subsequently it has a better supermarket than some places twice its size, so you can easily get pretty much everything you need. I find the prices in restaurants and bars much cheaper than the more 'sophisticated' resorts further south and you can get some really good value meals at Maccas under the Sunflower and at the Austrian and German restaurants where there's enough meat on your plate to fill a butcher's window.

My advice? For almost guaranteed sun along with sand, sea and chill-out you won't find much better but if you're looking for life after dark, karaoke in an Irish bar and sports TV coverage are all you'll find.
