Tenerife Insider open quotes a really nice mix of the traditional and the new close quotes

When I think of the small municipality (borough) of San Miguel de Abona, I mainly think 'farming and golf' which means it's got a really nice mix of the traditional and the new. Before the development of its south coast as some of the island's best golf courses, this little borough got quietly on with its agricultural livelihood, and life mainly revolved around the village of San Miguel, the municipal capital.

I love the drama of the landscape in this part of the south with the enormous Roque de Jama dominating the skyline and the neat cultivated terraces lined with pale jablé (pumice) which is used to retain moisture in the soil. Potatoes are a favourite crop here and the traditional 'papas arrugadas' (wrinkled potatoes) that you get with spicy mojo (sauce) are delicious. Try them and you'll be giving up chips in favour of them for the duration of your holiday.

There are great contrasts to be seen in San Miguel de Abona; the lush, rolling greens and purpose-built resort of Golf Del Sur at its coast; its chic new marina; the picturesque and tranquil village of San Miguel and the stunning views from La Centinela mirador.

If, like me, you enjoy exploring on foot, there are some good walking trails to be discovered here, especially ones that end at one of San Miguel's excellent restaurants!

And the must-sees? In San Miguel, don't miss the pretty church and old cobbled streets and Casa de El Capitán museum where you can discover how important camels used to be in these parts. For a night of jousting and The Drifters, there's a world of fun to be had at Castillo San Miguel; and of course, swing out to your heart's content at the picturesque golf courses of the coast.
