Travel Agents View great for those wanting to explore the area and for those who enjoy walking and hiking

San Miguel is located inland from Los Cristianos in the South of Tenerife. It is one of the oldest towns in the South of Tenerife in an elevated position in the mountain. The resort is great for those wanting to explore the area and for those who enjoy walking and hiking.

From the resort there are beautiful views and has easy access to places like Montana De Ifara and Granadilla. San Miguel is full of banana, potato, tomato, vegetable and flower plantations. In the resort you can explore the local markets which are full of fresh produce, enjoy the countryside with a walk or a picnic.

The streets are narrow with Canarian style architecture and a historical feel to it. Enjoy the restaurants and the few bars during the day or in the evenings with beautiful views.

Insider's View

It’s amazing what you can find if you just drive away from the southern resorts and explore inland. San Miguel is a rural hamlet with bags of character, luxurious and charismatic accommodation and deliciously good restaurants for such a small place.

My favourite is La Tasquita de Nino; great tapas in a lovely Canarian house that used to be a tobacco warehouse before Nino's grandparents made it their home. Just don't forget to duck; it has the headroom of a hobbit's house. I also like La Pimienta Verde; the building is very plain by comparison to Nino's but the fried camembert is addictively good and the chops are Desperate Dan-sized.

The bad news is there's not much night life in the village so if you want clubs you'll have to drive to the coast at Las Américas. The good news is you're on the doorstep of the very popular Castillo San Miguel where knights, jousting and castle-dining are the order of the night. Back in the village, if rum's your tipple, don't miss El Rincon Del Ron (rum corner) downstairs in La Bodega Vieja; Jorge has over 200 varieties to test your way through.

Later night revellers can expect to have their slumbers interrupted by cockerel crowing - I told you this was rural - but you can walk off the hangover with a short hike from the village to the Centinela Mirador. You'll have just the lizards, kestrels and perhaps a couple of paracetamol for company.

If you're there in late September watch out for the village fiesta, which includes free food and wine dispensed from carts pulled by oxen, and an exciting annual car rally in the hills around the village.

My advice? San Miguel is the perfect combination of southern sun with real Canarian character; less than half an hour's drive and a million miles away from the big resorts of the coast.
