Bajamar & Punta de Hidalgo

Travel Agent's View

Travel Agents View Bajamar is a small, sleepy fishing village and is located on the North East coast of Tenerife. Ideal for a quiet, relaxing holiday.

The resort is one of the oldest tourist resorts on the island and is still very popular with German visitors. As it is on the North East coast you are by the Atlantic Ocean, the surf from the Ocean makes it nearly impossible to swim in the sea. Nearby there are 2 large sea water pools which are excellent to use.

On your doorstep you will discover the Anaga Mountains. The mountains offer beautiful walks and an excellent escape from everyday life. In the resort is the tiny chapel of San Juan Bautista which dates back to 1628, excellent to explore.

Los Rodeos Airport is approx 18 km away from the resort.

Punta de Hidalgo is located on the Northern coast of Tenerife in the area of Anaga Massif. The village is suitable for those wishing for a quiet relaxing holiday or those wanting to explore the area. The area is dominated by vegetation including tabaibas, cacti, palm trees and banana plantations.

Let's be honest, neither Bajamar nor Punta de Hidalgo are going to win any awards for their beauty; too much 1960s concrete development. But Mother Nature has provided adequate compensation.

To start with, they're located on a really stunning coastline with some of the best views of Mount Teide to be found on the island. They're also sheltered by the Anaga Mountains and I have very rarely visited when it hasn't been wall to wall sunshine.

A real treat for me is to swim in the natural rock pool at Bajamar; it looks and feels like you're in the Atlantic but without the battered effect. Drying off on the decking is bliss too. In Punta de Hidalgo I walk along the promenade with the dog walkers and joggers, past the lighthouse, to the Charco de la Arena restaurant which is a great place for a beer. Keep walking to the end of the path and you get stunning views over the Anagas. Occasionally, I walk all the way to Chinemada in the mountains; it's a bit of a killer climb but then I’m a masochist.

For lunch in Hidalgo, my hot tip is the Cofradía at the little harbour. You can watch your fish being brought in and cleaned before it arrives, cooked to perfection, on your plate; to me, it's like a little piece of Cornwall on Tenerife. Seafood lovers in Bajamar should visit El Pris just along the coast; no frills and sometimes no tablecloth, just great fish. Take the coastal path from there to Mesa del Mar and walk through the tunnel, you'll emerge at a sheltered little cove with a black sand beach.

My advice? If you're looking for quiet, old fashioned resorts and don't care about their looks, you'll find value and sun by the boatload here and it's the perfect base for walking in the Anaga Mountains.
