Playa de las Americas is a very popular resort for families, couples and groups. In this resort there are 6 beaches, 3 of which are man-made and 3 of which are black sandy beaches. As there are so many beaches there is a wide variety of water sports to try out, including, diving trips, catamaran sailing trips, paragliding, pedalos, jet skiing and fun water rides.

Playa de las Americas is considered the most famous holiday resort of Tenerife, and is most famous for its wild nightlife. Playa de las Americas' nightlife is more orientated towards the young, hen and stag parties due to the vast amount of nightclubs and bars which it is most famous for.

Tenerife Insider open quotes Playa de Las Américas is Tenerife's ultimate sun, sand and sea getaway close quotes

open quotes You can still get your 'Euro a pint' and 'all day British breakfast' places, but they're not the only thing on offer any more close quotes

For me, Playa de Las Américas is Tenerife's ultimate sun, sand and sea getaway where everything is geared to the needs of visitors.

Very little of the resort still bears the scars of the 80s and 90s when it was the clubbing epicentre of the universe where holidaymakers under the age of 25 came to drink their way to a stomach pump. The area around Veronicas and Starcos at the western end of town is still the young party hub of the resort but it’s shrinking faster than the pound.

Today five star hotels, stylish bars, luxury nightclubs like Tibu and Liquid, award winning restaurants, fountains which dance to music and designer shops are the norm in Playa de las Américas. You can still get your 'Euro a pint' and 'all day British breakfast' places, but they're not the only thing on offer any more.

The beaches are long and golden, the sunbeds have all been trained to lie in neat rows and there's a wide, palm-lined promenade that runs the entire length of the resort. This is still Tenerife's nightlife capital but comedy, cabaret bands and tribute acts are more the norm nowadays. Most of the entertainment is in the area known as 'the patch' around the Las Américas commercial centre.

I prefer the less frenetic atmosphere around the Mare Nostrum and the Safari Centre where I can browse the designer shops wondering if that's a price tag or a serial number. And I love to pose at the Chiringuito Bar over a sunset aperitif, even if the bill does distract from the pretty colours on the horizon.

And the must-sees? The water kingdom of Siam Park lies right behind Las Américas. You won't find me on the lunacy that is known as the Tower of Power but you might catch me on the white sand Thai beach beside the ancient Thai temple, reading 'Anna and the King'.
