There's a rumour going around that in Puerto de la Cruz they hold a fiesta for the opening of a new roundabout…and it's true!

I can't think of a single month in the year when there isn't a fiesta of some sort and it usually involves music, wine and fireworks.

The biggest shindig is Carnaval of which the highlight for me is the high heels drag marathon. It's hilariously funny and the costumes are witty and outrageous but leave your political correctness in the suitcase as it’s all in the worst possible taste!

Puerto is known as Tenerife's 'sophisticated resort' and the unique and chic Lago Martiánez is one of the reasons why. When I'm applying the factor 25 at the side of the lake I feel like I'm on a Hollywood movie set and it's ridiculously good value for money; five star surroundings at two star prices. I like to take visitors there after dark too when it morphs into the sparkling entrance to the town's Casino which is located underneath the lake. It never fails to impress.

When it comes to eating out in Puerto the words 'spoilt' and 'choice' come to mind. But you can't go wrong if you head to the fishermen's district with its romantic setting, excellent cuisine and deliciously decadent desserts.

Some folks call it nosey, I call it people watching and Puerto's plazas are perfect venues for indulging in it over a carafe of local wine. When the weekend comes around and it's time to notch up the fun, my hot tip's Azucar, Cuban vibes and salsa. If you happen to see me in there, mine's a Mojito!

And the must-sees? Well it has to be Loro Parque - best bits are the gorillas, the dolphin show and Planet Penguin; and the Botanical Gardens – it's a jungle in there.
